A 59-year-old Delhi Police sub-inspector allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself on Thursday morning in New Delhi's Krishna Menon Marg, where he was posted in the security division.
Those investigating the incident claimed that the reason behind the officer's extreme step was yet to be ascertained. His colleagues, however, attributed it to depression over family issue.
"The victim, Ajit Singh, was posted at the E-block Security Lines near the Krishna Menon Marg roundabout. He shot himself in the head at 9am when he was outside the armoury in the verandah of the police station," said a senior police officer.
According to police, Singh was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
"His wife is in a state of shock and has denied any family or financial difficulties as a possible reason for the suicide. However, we are investigating their claim since his colleagues have told us that he was depressed for a period of more than three months," said the officer.
Police said no suicide note was recovered from him, but according to his colleagues, he was undergoing depression and had even discussed the matter with some of them.
"We have not registered a case yet. We are still investigating whether the reason for suicide is work-related stress or some family issues," the officer added.
Speaking at the Annual Delhi Police Press Conference after the matter was brought to his notice, BK Gupta, commissioner of police said, "Investigations into what led Singh to take this extreme step are on and whether it was stress that led him to take this extreme step will also be investigated".
