A 68-year-old widower who lived alone was murdered in his house in upscale Vasant Kunj, the police said on Sunday.

DK Joshi, a retired teacher, was last seen by neighbours on Friday evening. “His son (in the US) used to call him at least thrice a day. On Saturday, when he didn’t get an answer to his calls, he called up a relative. When the relative went to check on Sunday, he found the main door locked. The police were called and Joshi was found murdered inside,” said DCP (south) HGS Dhaliwal.

The victim had stab wounds on his chest and the back of his head. A pair of scissors, a dagger and a woman’s wig were discovered at the crime scene.

Police said the accused — there could be more than one — had gained “friendly entry” and left from the rear door, which was found open.

Neighbours said they heard Joshi’s TV on till Saturday afternoon and that six months ago, he’d rented out one of his rooms to four men. Police said a case had been registered and they would be questioning the maidservant and other help.

Joshi was a member of the Osho Ashram in Haryana and went there every weekend. “We went on morning and evening walks together. On Friday, when he didn’t come, I thought he’d gone to the ashram,” said PL Bakshi, a neighbour.
Joshi had his walking shoes on when his body was found.
