A 72-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in jail by a Delhi court for mowing down a teenager while working as a DTC driver 10 years ago. District Judge and Additional Sessions Judge RK Gauba sentenced former DTC driver Bali Ram, dismissing his appeal against the magisterial court order, saying "the case deserved stiffer sentence than the one awarded".

"The appeal against judgement (of magistrate) is devoid of substance. The rash driving by the appellant leading to the death of the child in question has been proved

beyond all doubts. Therefore, the appeal of the appellant challenging the judgement must be rejected," the court said.

The 15-year-old boy was crossing a road at Govind Puri in South Delhi along with his father on a bicycle on May 16, 2001 when the DTC bus rashly driven by Bali Ram hit them.

Though boy's father managed to escape, the boy came under the wheels of the bus and died on the spot.

Bihar native Bali Ram was nabbed on the mishap spot and was handed over to the police by the passersby.

In his defence, Bali Ram had contended before the sessions court that he was innocent and the victim himself had hit the bus from behind and had died. The court, however, had dismissed his submission saying it was "devoid of substance".
