In a shocking incident, the 77-year-old wife of a retired government official was beaten up and raped by a rickshaw puller in north Delhi, police said on Sunday.

According to the police, the victim, a resident of Rohini, had gone to her sister's house in the same locality on Friday afternoon and was returning home in a cycle rickshaw.

"Usually, her sister accompanied her, but the victim was alone when the incident happened. The rickshaw puller took a different route and took her to the Japanese Park area," a police officer said.

According to the victim's family, the rickshaw puller deliberately overturned the rickshaw and picked up an argument with the victim.

He then allegedly attacked her with a brick and raped her.

The incident occurred at a stone's throw away from K N Katju Marg police station.

The victim was found bruised and lying on the roadside early on Saturday morning by a passer-by.

"We have rounded up around 100 rickshaw pullers and are questioning them. The victim is reportedly the wife of a former town planner.

"The victim is undergoing treatment at a hospital and a case of rape has been registered," the police officer added.
