A 77-year-old woman, the wife of a former town planner, was allegedly abducted, physically assaulted and raped by an unidentified rickshaw puller, a mere 200 meters from a police station in outer Delhi’s KN Katju Marg on Friday evening, police said on Sunday.
“The victim claims that the incident had occurred at 7pm at the Japanese Park in Rohini’s Sector 9. However, it came to light early only on Saturday morning when the victim was discovered lying unconscious in the said park,” said a senior police officer.
Police said passersby intimated them about the presence of the unconscious victim following which she was rushed to the adjacent Bhim Rao Ambedkar hospital where a medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
“In her written complaint, the victim has stated that she was returning after a visit to her sister’s residence in Rohini’s Sector 15 on the fateful day. She had boarded the metro, de-boarded at the Rithala Metro Station and hired a rickshaw to reach home, located in Sector-7 for Rs 25,” the officer said.
According to police, instead of taking the victim home, the accused rickshaw puller who is suspected to be in his 20s, forcibly took her to a secluded place near the Japanese Park.
“According to the victim, the rickshaw puller had taken a different route (towards Sector-7) and suddenly turned towards the Japanese Park area, as he picked an argument with her,” said the officer.
“As soon as they reached the Park, the victim said she was attacked on the head with a brick, forced to sniff a chemical substance and sexually assaulted,” said the officer.
Police said the victim’s sons had approached the local police after their mother didn’t return home till late at night.
“We have rounded up around 100 rickshaw pullers and are in the process of questioning them,” said the officer.
“The victim is undergoing treatment at a private hospital and a case of rape has been registered,” the officer added.
