Eight hardened criminals were arrested following a raid at a house in Sector 40 on Monday evening.
The Gurgaon Police recovered a cache of arms and ammunition including five revolvers, 29 live cartridges, 51 mobile phones, four laptops and other hi tech telecom equipment in the raid.
Police said, following a tip off, a team of 24 policemen raided a house where these accused were found betting on the India Sri Lanka test cricket match. One of the criminals also opened a fire on the police team but no one was hurt, police said.
But the kingpin and brain behind the betting racket, Mahesh Kumar alias Attack, a known gangster with 15 cases including murder and dacoity on his head, and four others accomplices are still on the run.
Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Mittal said this is the first time such hardened criminals were found involved in illegal betting. He said the betting racket was going in the two floor house for a long time.
“We have a strong apprehension that these criminals were not only involved in betting but other kind of criminal activities as well,” Mittal said.
The commissioner said initial investigations into the call records of 51 mobile phones revealed that they were in touch with about 72 bookies, mostly from Delhi and Gurgaon, on a regular basis.
One room on the first floor was being used as a hi-tech betting centre with laptops and other telecommunication paraphernalia fitted in it. Three rooms on the ground floor were being used as office.
