A senior citizen was stabbed to death at his residence in Sukhdev Vihar in South Delhi.
Eighty-one-year-old Madan Mohan Gulati, a retired railway civil engineer, was attacked by robbers at 1.30 am on Monday. His wife Indu Prabha Gulati (72) too was attacked and is serious.
The assailants, who were masked and armed with knives, escaped with Rs 20,000 in cash and some jewellery.
Gulati’s tenant Abhay Dongre informed the police. The police found the couple lying in a pool of blood.
The police said four to five robbers had climbed the boundary wall, which is about 10 feet high, to enter the house. “The robbers used the trees next to the wall to get in. The robbers then broke the glass door,” said a senior police officer.
The robbers then held knives against the couple’s throat and demanded cash and jewellery. “He tried to hit the robber holding the knife. The robbers then stabbed him at least six times. When his wife pleaded with them to stop, she too was stabbed five times and was hit on her head,” said a police officer. Gulati died on the spot.
The couple were taken to the AIIMS trauma centre. Their nephew Gagan Gulati said, “I was informed by a relative whom the police had contacted. My aunt had undergone surgery in the morning.” He said the tenants in the house were living there for the last one year.
Gulati’s two children Vivek and Namrata live in the USA. They were on their way back after hearing about the incident.
DCP South West Ajay Chaudhry said, “We have registered a case of murder, attempt to murder and robbery against the assailants.”
The police have detained a woman, a domestic help who was working at the couple’s residence for last 15 years, for questioning.
