Puran Arya (41) has been living at his house in Shahpur Jat in South Delhi for the past 20 years. Yet, a few days ago when a policeman came to verify his address, he gave an adverse report saying Arya doesn’t live there. At the passport office, this report led to his application for a passport being rejected. Arya had to apply again.

He applied for a passport five months ago, but is still to get it.

“You have to go through the entire procedure all over again to clarify a single query. When my turn came, it was time for the passport office to close. The next day I came again and asked them for my status. They told me that police report said that I don’t stay at the address mentioned in the form,” said Arya.

Arya, who works at Panchsheel club in south Delhi has got a job offer from Japan.

“I had said yes to the company in the hope that I would get my passport in time. But since that hasn’t happened I am stuck here. It has been five months that I have been coming here regularly. No one listens to me,” he said.

“I earn a meagre amount. I had applied for a passport hoping that I would have a better future ahead. Going abroad means more money. The state of affairs here is such that I doubt I will get any chance to improve the life of my family,” said Arya.

He added that he would have to go through the entire procedure all over again and if needed will take the help of a tout. “If I do not get my passport this time, I will take the help of touts. At least that will ensure me a passport,” he said.
