Residents of Mayur Vihar Phase-I were in for a rude shock when they woke up on Sunday morning. Thieves had broken into at least 40 cars in the colony in the early hours on Sunday and made away with accessories, including stereos and air conditioners.
The thefts took place barely 100 metres from the local police station. The colony has six gates and all of them are locked at night. However, the lock of one of the gates was found broken and the thieves were suspected to have entered through this gate.
This is the second such theft in the city in the last one week. On Wednesday, thieves had struck in a similar fashion in Green Park. A similar theft was reported from Gurgaon last week where thieves broke into several cars and made away with car accessories. Police did not rule out the involvement of a “particular gang” behind all the incidents.
The Sunday’s incident was reported from Pocket II of Mayur Vihar Phase I.
“The side glass of all the cars were broken and thieves made away with stereos and air conditioners. The police post is a few metres away. What was the police doing when they were breaking the windowpanes,” said Ashish Banerjee, whose car was also targeted by the thieves.
Police said four security guards were posted in the colony. Police have lifted some fingerprints from the cars. “We are trying to grill the local criminals who have a previous record in the crime,” said the officer.
“Windowpanes had been smashed and stereos taken away. This was a planned and meticulous crime,” said Sandeep Kumar, another resident.
A case has been registered.
