AAP receives over 10,000 applications for MCD election ticket

Elections for the three municipal corporations are likely to be held in April. The state election commission is yet to notify the dates.

The dates for the MCD elections are yet to be announced, but the Aam Aadmi Party has already received over 10,000 applications for party tickets.

The AAP started distributing tickets last week, holding volunteers’ meet across municipal wards. All party volunteers interested in contesting polls are expected to submit their applications at these meetings.

“We have already received about 10,097 applications. More applications are expected as to date the volunteers meet have been held only in about 200 of 272 municipal constituencies,” a senior AAP leader involved with the screening process said.

Of the 10,097 applications, 2,902 are from east, 3673 from south and 3533 from north for 209 seats.Applications for rest of the 63 seats are being processed.

Elections for the three municipal corporations are likely to be held in April. The state election commission is yet to notify the dates.

The response, AAP leaders said, was very encouraging. “The excitement at the party volunteers meet shows that the sense on the ground is that the AAP will sweep the MCD polls as well,” an AAP leader said, the party is likely to wind up the ticket distribution process in about ten days.

The AAP has formed a screening committee to shortlist candidates for the municipal elections. As per the process adopted, first screening of names will be done at the Vidhan Sabha level.

“Three-four names from each municipal ward will come to the screening committee. After further screening, a final list will be sent to the party’s Political Affairs Committee for approval,” a senior party leader said.
