Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal will himself launch the party’s door-to-door campaign from his own constituency New Delhi on Wednesday.
The party intends to involve its 4,000 active volunteers to visit the 33 lakh households in Delhi to build a public opinion in favour of elections. This comes after the Centre declined to respond Kejriwal’s one-week ultimatum to pave the way for elections in Delhi or face agitation.
“It’s a signature campaign. Also, we will distribute a pamphlet with a nine-point message, explaining why elections are needed. The party has shot three videos. Volunteers will transfer these to the cell phones of people they will be visiting. We have made all preparations,” a party spokesperson told HT.
The party is not likely to get bitter with the BJP or the Congress like it did with the 2013 assembly elections. “Just take the record of AAP’s 49-day rule and people will vote for you. We had done so well that people want us back. Every volunteer should get started,” Kejriwal said in his address on Saturday.
In February, the AAP quit its 49-day government in Delhi to fight the Lok Sabha polls, resulting in Delhi being without an elected government and the assembly in suspension for over five months.
To a question if the party should declare candidates on seats where AAP’s presence is weak, Kejriwal said, “Names will be announced only after election dates are known.”
Rattled by the chaos that a largely unstructured army of volunteers creates, AAP is also framing, for the first time, a definition of who a volunteer is and registering them to tackle growing voices of dissent. “A volunteer is either a polling booth volunteer, or booth in-charge, or polling station in-charge, or ward in-charge, or district in-charge or state in-charge. He has to fit somewhere, take some responsibility,” Kejriwal said in his address.
On Tuesday, AVAM or Aam Aadmi Party Volunteers Action Manch will hold a press conference “to clear the air” and point out “all that ails AAP.”
The AAP has been saying it has nothing to do with AVAM. In his address to volunteers, Kejriwal said that an FIR can be lodged against those spreading lies under the garb of AVAM “but it’s best to ignore them.”
