A struggling model-turned-actress and a Nigerian national have been arrested with more than three kilograms of heroin that was to be sent to South Africa, police said.
Hema, who has acted in several ad films and has also done an item song in the Bhojpuri remake of Bollywood movie Don, became a drug carrier to make easy money, the police said.
“She was promised Rs 40,000 for every consignment delivered from Jammu to New Delhi,” said a police officer.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said she met Nigerian national Onwaso Okolonta, who came to India on a six-month tourist visa in 2006 and overstayed illegally, through a common friend.
Police said the drug consignment was worth over Rs 3 crore in the international market. Hema took the packet from a person named Rummy, a drug trafficker based in Jammu who smuggles in narcotics from his Pakistani accomplice Zorawar, said an officer.
Rummy supplied these drugs to the Nigerians in New Delhi and its surroundings areas, said an officer. These consignments were meant to be smuggled out.
The police had prior information that Hema had gone to Jammu to take a delivery of heroin on June 27 and would come back the next day to hand over the consignment to Okolonta near Metro station in Nawada.
“We had information that Hema would meet Onwaso to give him the packet near the Nawada Metro station. We arrested them there,” said DCP Alok Kumar.
