Schools are once again in a quandary over admissions to students from the economically weaker section (EWS) with the Delhi government issuing fresh directives.

The government on Wednesday said schools will have to conduct EWS admissions throughout the year, including the summer holidays, to fill vacant EWS seats as per the RTE norms. But schools are worried over the modalities that needs to be looked into to ensure that the process runs glitch-free.

Education minister Arvinder Singh had earlier announced that close to 8,000 seats for the EWS category needed to be filled up under the RTE Act.

Singh had earlier said that seats had been left vacant because there were not enough contenders. But schools said it also happened due to confusion among the EWS category students. "Many EWS candidates who had got admission in two or more schools left seats vacant. This seat then had to be filled up all over again, which means that the school has to conduct a fresh lottery," said Ameeta Wattal, vice-chairperson, NPSC.

Schools also demanded uniformity of sections in all schools, since a larger number of sections in classes above Nursery mean additional EWS seats.
