Complaining about sub-standard or adulterated food being served to you in Capital will be a lot easier now.

The Delhi government’s department of food safety is launching a 24-hour helpline in the next two weeks to lodge such complaints.

After receiving a complaint, inspectors from the department will lift samples from shop or restaurant and take action that can lead to imprisonment of up to seven years for the offenders.

“We have drafted a proposal and will send it to the finance department for approval,” said KJR Burman, commissioner, department of food safety.

Sources said while the department receives around 40 complaints about sub-standard food every month, consumers often take a long time to lodge their grievances. This makes action against erring food-sellers difficult. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/7/30-07-12-pg-01b.jpg

“There are people who want to complain but are unable to do so. This helpline will prove useful for them,” a senior Delhi government official said.
