After tiger, the Dhonis opt for a street dog
Team India captain MS Dhoni has adopted a rescued stray pup from the Hope and Animal Trust in Ranchi. The cricketer has named the pup Leah and even posted its picture on Twitter. Sanjoy Dey reports.
Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and wife Sakshi Dhoni have adopted a rescued stray pup in Ranchi from an NGO engaged by the city’s municipal corporation for registration of pet dogs and stray dog control and management.
They adopted the pup in the first week of July but Dhoni confirmed it on Twitter on Thursday, saying, “Adopted a rescued pup from Hope and Animal Trust Ranchi. v call her Leah in English and Liya in Hindi.” He also uploaded the pup’s picture on Twitter.
Hope and Animal Trust CEO Praveen Ohal said, "Dhoni’s wife selected the pup in the first week of July. She took it home after Dhoni’s consent. He was in the West Indies for the tri-series at that time."
He said the female pup is now around three months old and growing healthy. Executives of the NGO said Dhoni’s wife wants better care for Indian dogs.
"We believe that their step will encourage more people to come to the rescue of street dogs," Ohal said.
Known for his love for animals, Dhoni had adopted a nine-year-old tiger named Agasthya in 2011 from Mysore zoo.
Dhoni is currently on a break from international cricket.
