After a world-class Metro and airport, the Capital is all set to get a world-class bus terminus.
The refurbished inter-state bus terminus at Kashmere Gate, which chief minister Sheila Dikshit termed "as swanky as the Delhi airport terminal" in her Republic Day speech, is likely to be reopened in the coming week.
With facilities such as an air-conditioned waiting lounge, glass elevators and modern toilets, the Kashmere Gate ISBT is all set to give you an international experience.
Inaugurated in 1976, the ISBT was partially closed in July 2011 for renovation. Before it was closed partially, nearly 2,000 inter-state buses and 400 local buses used to operate from Kashmere Gate every day and it catered to more than one lakh passengers. The number touched almost 1.5 lakh during the festival season.
According to a transport department official, the ISBT has now been transformed completely keeping the commuters' convenience in mind. The arrival and departure areas have been redesigned and the bus circulation plan changed. Escalators have been installed to take passengers to different levels of the terminal and there is an enquiry booth at the centre of the terminus. There is also a food court for passengers and people accompanying them.
Proper seating arrangement has been provided at various places for passengers waiting for their buses to arrive. The building has also been retrofitted to make it earthquake resistant.
"To ensure safety, high-resolution closed circuit television cameras have been installed in the entire building. There will be 24x7 monitoring of the building as well as the bus bay and track. To make the system more secured, we have installed boom barriers and an access-controlled system for buses. A latest public announcement system has also been installed," a senior transport department official said.
The transport department is renovating the Kashmere Gate ISBT in two phases. The first phase work, which included renovating the exterior of the building and improvement of the arrival and departure halls and bus bays, is over. Transport department officials said they will now connect the terminus with Kashmere Gate Metro station in the second phase.
