An elderly women was mowed down by a speeding car near the RK Ashram Marg metro station on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, 55-year-old Geeta Devi, was crossing the road around 2:30pm when an Alto car being allegedly driven by Asha Yadav, a nurse at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), hit her.

“The incident took place near metro pillar number 10, near RK Ashram Marg metro station, when Yadav was going towards Connaught Place,” said a police officer.

Eyewitnesses told HT that the victim was crossing the road when the speeding car hit her. “The victim lost consciousness and was bleeding from the nose,” said Wali Ahmed, an eyewitness.

Asha rushed the victim to the nearby Lady Hardinge Medical College hospital on Bhagat Singh Marg but she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Police officers said even though the victim was pronounced dead at 3:15pm, the hospital authorities didn’t allow them to shift the body to the mortuary despite several requests.

“The hospital authorities claimed that some important paper work was needed and the body kept lying in the emergency ward,” said a police officer.

“Due to the delay in handing over the body, the family members of the victim protested outside the Mandir Marg police station,” the officer said.

The family members shouted slogans and threatened to block the road if action was not taken in the case.

The family members alleged that the police was trying to shield the accused since Asha’s father is an assistant sub-inspector of Delhi Police. He is posted at the CR Park police station, police sources said. A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered at Mandir Marg police station. Asha was later released on bail. Both the victim and the accused are residents of Paharganj.
