The airport shopping experience will soon be coming to two Metro stations. The Delhi Airport Metro Express, which completes a year on February 23, will make available the "retail therapy" at Shivaji Stadium and New Delhi stations.

"These two Metro stations will emerge as mini-airports within four to five months. Over 100 retail outlets would be opened at these stations," said Anil P Gupta, president, Reliance Infrastructure, the company that runs the airport metro.

Domestic check-ins, flight updates and information kiosks are already available. Shops, spas, internet lounges, vending machines and restaurants would be the new additions. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/20feb_pg1c.jpg

Travellers will have the option of spending time at the stations instead of waiting at the airport, Gupta said.

Leading national and international retail brands would be setting up showrooms, he said. There is just one dampener - no duty-free shops, so far.

Airport Metro stations require fliers to check-in six-eight hours ahead of the flight. They can spend time shopping, browsing the net or can even go site-seeing, making use of the taxi service for which the firm has tied up with Delhi Tourism.

"New Delhi station is being developed as a travellers' hub while Shivaji Stadium will be the entertainment and shopping centre," Gupta said.

In its one year, the Airport Express has seen its daily passenger base go up to 20,000 from 4,000.
