The word delay has become synonymous with the Capital’s swanky airport Metro.

After missing several deadlines — starting with the initial run ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 — the high-speed Metro train service, which was started in February 2011 and was suspended this July following major problems in construction, is set to miss its November deadline.

And if the authorities are to be believed, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is responsible for the delay this time. The CMRS is yet to give a date to conduct a safety inspection of the 22.7-km line.

Earlier, urban development ministry had set two deadlines for the reopening of the service — September and October, 2012 — but failed as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), responsible for civil construction of the stretch, could not complete the repair work.

“We cannot actually give any specific date now. The line will be opened only after getting requisite clearances from CMRS,” Sudhir Krishna, secretary, MoUD, said.

Earlier last month, the DMRC had declared that the line would be made operational before Diwali. Jitendra Tyagi, director (works), DMRC, had told HT that repair work would be completed and services resumed before this Diwali.

“We were ready but until CMRS inspects the line, the service cannot start,” Tyagi said adding, “It will not open in November. We are expecting that everything will be in place by the first week of December.”

Sources said DMRC had earlier wanted to start the service without CMRS’ intervention as “this is not a new project”. But Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd (DAMEPL), which is the concessionaire, had demanded an inspection.

The concessionaire company on November 5 had forwarded a request to CMRS through the DMRC for a safety inspection but didn’t get a date from RK Kardam, CMRS.

Kardam could not be contacted for his comment. DAMEPL also has refused to comment.
