Soon, passengers will have to pass through stricter security check at the entry gate of Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Suspicious-looking passengers will now have to get their baggage checked at the entry gate as security agencies have asked the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to install three X-ray baggage screeners at T3.
Normally, passengers spend at least an hour inside the terminal before they have to go for hand baggage checking or frisking. The decision was taken following a blast at the Moscow airport, where a person entered with explosives showing his e-ticket at the entry gate. “A passenger can enter an airport without any frisking as checking everyone is not possible. But considering the sensitivity of the issue, Ministry of Home Affairs has asked to check suspicious-looking passengers at the gate itself,” said a source in Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
BCAS has asked DIAL to install baggage screeners at the earliest. “We are ready to check passengers randomly at the gate but are waiting for X-ray screeners. The screeners will be placed at three gates of T3 and baggage of suspicious-looking passengers will be checked,” said an officer of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). CISF is responsible for the security of the airport.
“We have recently started concourse check-in at three airports, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. This is for the first time we have started concourse check-in at any airport in India and it is soon going to be introduced in Delhi as well,” he added.
“The behaviour of a person entering airport will decide whether his frisking is required or not. We are not going to frisk each and every person entering the airport,” he added. A baggage scanner will be placed at the terminal gate to scan the baggage. At present, anyone can enter the terminal building after showing a ticket since no checking is being done at the entry gate.
Under the concourse plan, passengers have to go through checking of baggage, hand baggage and frisking at the first point of entry at the airport.
Meanwhile, a DIAL spokesperson said they have not received any communication from the BCAS to provide three baggage X-ray screeners to CISF.
