A new crop of highly skilled women commandoes of the Delhi police trained to tackle anyone from a roadside romeo to a deadly terrorist is getting ready.

Following the recent spate of incidents of gangrapes in the national Capital, the Delhi police conceptualised the plan to train its women officers to undergo such training.

This is for the first time in the history of Delhi police that a fresh batch of women personnel is being trained in commando tactic at the police training academy.

These personnel, once the training is over, will be posted at strategic locations across the city which are frequented more by women including Delhi University and also deployed at police control room.

Already 10 days into the training and the 461 women personnel are already mastering the art of hand-to-hand combat to take down perpetrators without using handcuffs.

“They would also learn to use a variety of assault rifles including AK47, MP-5 sub-machine gun among other. They would also learn to climb walls. But their main purpose is to secure women across the Capital,” said SN Srivastava, joint commissioner of police (Training).

He added, “These women personnel would be deployed at key strategic locations as well as be part of VIP security details. Once they have acquired their skills they would have to attend refresher courses and then they would be graded accordingly.” Out of these 461 personnel, 100 would be given VIP security posts after their initial assessment.

“They would be a vital part of VIP security details as they could provide cover to women VIPs. They can be with them at all places,” added a senior police officer.

“Women security was the top priority. It is a seven-month course and they would be trained in every aspect of commando tactic,” he added.

These women commandoes are receiving the same level of training given to their male counterparts.
