Setting aside any possible impact of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s inability to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new SP government in Lucknow, the CM-elect Akhilesh Yadav told Trinamool leaders, “I will visit Kolkata very soon and meet Mamata didi.”
On Monday, Yadav junior walked up to different party leaders in Parliament and during his long chat with Trinamool’s chief whip in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandopadhyay, Akhilesh hinted at wanting closer ties with other regional parties. He also reportedly told BJD members that his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, will play an active role in the ‘federal front’—the informal group of regional parties.
“I explained why Banerjee can’t attend his swearing-in ceremony on March 15. He fully understood and promised to visit Kolkata with his father,” Bandopadhyay told HT.
While Banerjee will be in Kolkata, senior Trinamool leaders Mukul Roy and Sultan Ahmed will represent the party at the swearing-in ceremonies of UP and Punjab CMs.
