The presence of mind of a head constable saved the life of a sub-inspector in southeast Delhi, when he tackled a young vehicle thief who was about to shoot at his senior colleague.
The incident took place near the Modi Mill flyover on Tuesday evening, when Rahul, 22, who is allegedly involved in 12 cases of vehicle theft, walked into a police trap.
Virender Singh Chahal, additional commissioner of police (south-east), said, "Police had information that Rahul would pass through the area and had laid a trap. When intercepted, Rahul took out a country-made pistol and pointed it towards sub-inspector Ashish Dalal and pulled the trigger. But due to some mechanical problem, it failed to fire."
The police said that meanwhile head constable Anil caught hold of the accused and hit him on the hand with a lathi. The accused was arrested soon after.
During interrogation, Chahal said, “Rahul told the police that he was into auto-lifting, along with his associate Guddu, whom he had met in Tihar Jail.
"He is on bail and was released from jail in April 2010. At present he was not residing at his previous address but at a place in Sangam Vihar," added Chahal.
