A major incident was averted in Ghaziabad when a coach of New Delhi-Gaya Mahabodhi Express derailed near Chipiyana Burjurg control panel, a few kilometres away from Ghaziabad Junction on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when the driver suddenly spotted some error and reversed the train on the Delhi-Aligarh mainline near Chipiyana control panel.

While on the back course, the third-coach of the express train derailed and could not proceed, railways officials said.

Ram Narayan, a passenger headed for Allahabad, said, "The train was moving slowly and then suddenly we heard a loud sound. A coach had derailed but due to the driver's presence of mind, a major accident was averted."

No casualties were reported in the accident, which held up railway traffic for a couple of hours on Wednesday.

Sources in the GRP said the train was given a go-through on a wrong track towards the EMU-car shed when the driver spotted the error and reversed the train.

A Railways spokesperson at Delhi said an emergency and rescue train was dispatched for Ghaziabad to clear up the track and provide any aid to the passengers, if required. An official committee was also constituted to inquire into the incident, officials confirmed.

The other coaches of the train were brought back to Ghaziabad Junction to continue the journey.

"It would be premature to say anything right now as it could be a technical or human error," said railway official H.C. Joshi, General Manager NCR-Allahabad. The traffic was restored after 7 p.m.
