With social media platforms and blogging being the flavour of the times, the government has also joined the new wave. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) debuted on popular micro-blogging site Twitter on Wednesday and now its plan to enter video-sharing site You Tube are well into the final stages.

“We are in the final stages of an exclusive You Tube account for PIB,” said Neelam Kapur, principal director general, PIB.

“While Twitter will be very handy in giving out instant alerts, You Tube will represent the audiovisual elements.

These are new forms for communication and we want to use them to reach out to a certain audience which includes the media and the public,” she added.

PIB is the government’s nodal agency to spread information to the media on policies, programmes, initiatives and achievements. Besides being an interface between the government and the media, PIB also provides feedback to the government on people’s reaction as reflected in the media.

Nor is the government staying put at that, it plans to be present in other social media formats depending on the need and circumstances.

These developments are part of an overarching media plan to hype its policies and achievements with obvious expectations of dividends in the parliamentary polls in 2014.
