A Delhi court on Thursday granted four-day interim bail to Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam in the light of his poor health.
Singh, who was arrested on September 6 after he appeared before Special Judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal following filing of chargesheet against him and five others by the Delhi Police, is recuperating in AIIMS.
“The accused (Singh), an MP and a known figure cannot be shown extra indulgence but he must also not be subjected to undue harshness as humane angle can never be lost sight of by the courts of equity, justice and good conscience,” the court said.
Singh has been granted bail on a personal bond of R2 lakh with one surety of the same amount. The court directed him to deposit his passport and told him not to leave Delhi without its permission. It also asked him not to tamper with the evidence or try to influence witnesses.
The court ordered AIIMS to submit a report on his day-to-day health status on September 19, when his regular bail plea would be taken up for hearing. “In case, the accused is discharged from AIIMS before September 19, AIIMS director shall apprise the court without loss of time,” it said.
Meanwhile, doctors at AIIMS said that Singh’s condition had showed some improvement.
Jaya Prada warning
Coming out strongly in Singh's support, actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada said many big people would get into trouble — if Singh were to open his mouth.
She also lashed out at Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for not having the courtesy to visit ailing Singh.
