The odd-even scheme of the Aam Aadmi Party government to curb pollution got a thumbs up from Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Wednesday.

“I salute odd even, but important to think of the problem before it arises,” Sen said during the NDTV’s Nobel Solutions held in New Delhi.

Sen said that it requires a strong political will to roll out such an initiative.

“The fact that it (odd-even scheme) succeeded; it’s a reason of happiness. Also, it brings confidence that something like this can be done. And I hope there will be many more to reduce pollution and other environmental hazards. And yes, it does require political will to roll out such an initiative,” Sen told Hindustan Times.

“Pollution in Beijing easier to see than Delhi, hence harder to create awareness here,” said Sen.

The Delhi government had introduced the scheme from January 1 and has claimed that it has helped reduced pollution in the Capital.

The scheme allows only vehicles with registration numbers ending in odd-numbered digits to run on odd-numbered dates and vice versa.
