Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen will deliver the inaugural Professor Hiren Mukherjee Memorial Parliamentary lecture in the Central Hall of Parliament on Monday in the presence of the Vice-President, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries. A portrait of Mukherjee will be unveiled on the occasion.
Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has taken the initiative to institute the Professor Hiren Mukherjee Memorial Parliamentary Lecture. The theme is Demands of Social Justice.
Mukherjee, an exceptionally gifted intellectual and a brilliant orator, served Lok Sabha for five consecutive terms from 1952 to 1977. During his illustrious parliamentary career Mukherjee made effective use of the forum to raise grievances of the people and usher in a society that would ensure a dignified existence for every citizen.
“His informed views on diverse issues have acquired greater urgency in recent times as the nation confronts the task of uplifting the deprived and downtrodden. It is in this context that Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has taken the initiative to institute the Professor Hiren Mukherjee Memorial Parliamentary Lecture to carry forward Prof. Mukherjee’s illuminating discourse on issues of contemporary relevance,” a Lok Sabha press note said.
While Vice-President Hamid Ansari will preside over the function, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be the Chief Guest and Speaker Somnath Chatterjee will deliver the welcome address.
