Ambani brothers Mukesh and Anil did a whirlwind tour of capital, touching base with senior political leaders ahead of the counting of the votes for the 15th general election.
The meetings were reminiscent of May 2004, when Mukesh called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the eve of the results. Both brothers are known to take keen interest in political affairs and have close friends across parties.
Mukesh met Sonia’s political secretary Ahmad Patel for 40 minutes on Wednesday and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and union minister Prem Gupta for 30 minutes.
Mukesh’s meeting with Gupta was to get a sense of the mood in the RJD-Samajwadi Party (SP)-Lok Janshakti Party alliance, sources told HT.
In the night he flew back to Mumbai, and his private jet had two guest — National Congress Party leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, both union ministers.
Younger brother Anil met some government officials before a 30-minute meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
He spent an hour with SP leaders Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav. Both brothers did not meet anyone from the BJP.
