It's over and out for Team Anna.
In a sudden move, social activist Anna Hazare disbanded the core committee, which steered the lokpal agitation for almost 16 months, on Monday, three days after the team decided to take the political plunge.
"We're stopping the activities of Team Anna from today. It was formed to fight for jan lokpal... Now people have asked us to leave fasting and give a political alternative," Hazare blogged.
The post triggered talk of differences within the 25-member team over forming a political party and contesting the 2014 general elections.
"It is a collective decision… The interpretations about differences on providing a political alternative are incorrect," Prashant Bhushan, one of the members and a lawyer, said.
Hazare said the government was not ready to enact the jan lokpal bill and there would be no talks.
Moments later, justice Santosh Hegde, one of the prominent names in the camp, said, "I feel sorry about the
decision to disband the team." A strong lokpal was need of the hour, the former Supreme Court judge said.
Hazare's colleagues in the Capital stressed there were no differences.
India Against Corruption (IAC), set up to build public pressure in favour said "since the movement for lokpal has now become a movement for total revolution", the core committee had med its responsibility.
"It (core committee) was formed for jan lokpal. That phase is over... Preparatory committee (is) being formed," tweeted Arvind Kejriwal, who has on many occasions accused of hijacking the movement.
There have been differences in the team on joining politics.
The first murmurs were heard after Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi, a former IPS officer, campaigned against the Congress in Hisar Lok Sabha byelection last October.
It saw Gandhian PV Rajagopal and water conservation activist Rajinder Singh disassociating from the team.
