The Capital, which already tops the list of most number of dowry deaths in four metropolitan cities, has reported another alleged dowry death.
The latest victim is a 24-year-old woman who was poisoned to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws at their house in Delhi Cantonment area on Sunday morning. In her dying statement, the victim accused her husband and in-laws for her death.
The deceased was identified as Meenakshi who got married to one Sanjay nearly five years ago. Sanjay works in a private company. Meenakshi’s family members have alleged that her in-laws had been harassing her, both physically and mentally, for dowry for the past few months. Their demands of Rs. 50,000 in cash and a motorcycle had not been met, alleged the victim’s family.
Meenakshi’s brother Rahul Dholwal alleged that her in-laws had overpowered her and forced her to drink a white liquid around 9am on Sunday. “Within a few minutes, her health started deteriorating. She escaped from the house and reached our home in Vasant Vihar in an auto and collapsed. We rushed her to the nearby Charak Palika hospital where the doctors asked us to shift her to Safdarjung Hospital. Around 9pm, we shifted her to Safdarjung hospital where she died around 10.15pm,” said Dholwal.
A senior police officer also confirmed that Meenakshi died during treatment at Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday night.
On the basis of her statement and a complaint by her family members, a case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station. Efforts are now being made to arrest the accused.
Meenakshi is survived by two children — a three-year-old son and a seven-month-old daughter.
