A one-year-old boy died on Sunday evening after he fell in an open drain near his house in Rampuri area of Ghaziabad. The toddler died at GTB hospital in Delhi.

Police have confirmed the death of the minor but said no complaint was received by them. But the police said they would investigate the case nonetheless.

Police said Shameem,1, was playing outside his house at Rampuri on Sunday evening when he crawled towards the drain and fell in it. Soon, some local residents spotted the boy and rushed him to GTB hospital in Delhi.

"The boy could not survive and died on Monday. We have instructed our officials to look into the matter and meet his family members. We are gathering more details about the incident," Link-Road station officer Upendra Kumar Yadav told Hindustan Times.

"The drain is around four feet wide and open. His parents were unaware that the baby had crawled out of the house," a local resident said.

The incident comes close on the heels of the death of four-year-old Sunny.

The boy had drowned in an open drain outside Holy Mother Public School at Vasundahra sector-16 in Ghaziabad. Sunny died due to the negligence of his school authorities.

Also, in a similar incident reported earlier at Indirapuram, a senior official of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) died after he fell in an open Ganga-water pipeline pit at Green Valley area on May 6.
