A man serving in the Indian Army is believed to be behind the murder of his brother whose bullet-riddled body had been found near a tube well in Fajjupur Khadar more than a month ago.
The trigger for the murder was a simmering property dispute, investigators have claimed.
Devinder, who is currently posted in Jammu and Kashmir, and his brother Ranvir had hired contract killers to murder Mahinder on February 8. A day later, police had registered a case of murder against unknown persons on the insistence of, ironically, his brothers.
On Tuesday, the police picked up one of the brothers and questioned him for long. Police sources suggested that Ranvir admitted to being involved in the crime.
The sources added that the three brothers had sold some of their land to a builder. Mahinder, as part of the deal, got Rs 14 lakh and some land.
This apparently did not go down well with his siblings. They plotted his murder and hired Balraj and Vikas, both residents of Neemka, to kill him. The duo were promised Rs 6 lakh for doing the job.
The police arrested Ranvir and the killers on Tuesday and produced them in a court that remanded them in police custody for three days. Devinder, an armyman, is away in Jammu and Kashmir.
