The Indian Army wants to add muscle to its specialised dog units. It has sought the government’s permission to import a variety of dog breeds such as German shepherds and cocker spaniels, army sources said on Thursday.
Army dogs and their handlers played a crucial role during the 26/11 anti-terror operations in Mumbai. “Sniffer dogs are a highly valued military asset in counter-terrorism operations. The canines have helped soldiers bust terrorist hideouts, detect mines and save lives of disaster victims,” said an army officer.
