The fetish for a life of glamour pushed Himanshu Jetly (20) alias Honey, an aspiring model and actor, to the crime of his life. South East District Police arrested him on Thursday for allegedly clubbing to death his friend, 25-year-old IT executive Veerpal Kaur Gill.
Jetly allegedly killed Gill after she refused to give him money for his portfolio.
The aspiring model-cum-actor — he was wearing a fashionable ‘Megadeth’ T-shirt and blue jeans and sporting a trendy haircut and stubble, gold rimmed Aviator sunglasses — wore a defiant look as he stood at the Kalkaji Police Station.
Gill lived alone at a rented flat in Kalkaji. After killing her, the accused fled with her ATM card, laptop and I-Pod, police said. The police traced the IMEI number of Gill's laptop to Chandigarh.
“We questioned the person who had the laptop and the person turned out to be Jetly's friend. We then went to the Jetly's house in Ludhiana but could not find him. This further raised suspicion as he was also evading our calls and was not participating in the interrogation,” said Shalini Singh, DCP (southeast).
The murder was discovered on July 30 when a police team reached Gill’s fourth-floor flat in Kalkaji to investigate a complaint of a foul odour from within the locked residence.
The police broke open the entrance door and found the body of Gill, which had started to decompose.
A special team of the police identified and interrogated Gill’s closest friends, during which they got their first clue. “We made it a point to interrogate all of Gill's closest friends, but Jetly kept trying to evade questioning,” said Singh.
“We tried to get him to talk again before he fled home to Ludhiana,” she said.
The police then dispatched a team to raid Jetly’s Ludhiana residence and discovered that he and his family were absconding, police said. The team finally came in contact with one of Jetly’s friends and recovered the laptop and I-Pod from him. The laptop was registered in the name of Gill.
Armed with proof and having learnt that the accused had fled to Delhi, the police laid a trap and arrested Jetly from Alaknanda in south Delhi. After initially denying the charge, Jetly broke down on sustained interrogation and confessed to having killed Gill for money, police said.
Jetly, who is pursuing a course in acting from a local institute, had demanded money from Gill for his portfolio.
