Just to save 75 paise and two minutes of his time, he took a detour that cost two school children their lives. And he would always drive fast, despite repeated warnings by the parents of the girls. The driver of the autorickshaw, in which the five schoolgirls met with an accident, was in hurry to drop the children and decided to take the slip road on Route 51 on Mukundpur Azadpur road.
“It is a shortcut which many use as they do not want to go through the hassle of taking a U-turn from the Azadpur flyover. The road is so narrow that it is not possible for two vehicles to move side-by-side and people speed up on this road as well,” said a senior police officer.
The police said that when the autorickshaw driver saw the canter coming towards the vehicle, he jumped out to save himself and later ran away and is yet to be caught by the police.
Even earlier, this slip road has seen minor accidents, the police said. “In the last one month, there have been four minor accidents,” the officer revealed.
Victim had just celebrated her birthday
Manisha had just celebrated her 13th birthday on January 17.
A resident of Janta Vihar in Mukundpur, she along with her other friends had no other way to get to school, except to use an autorickshaw.
“She got transferred to her present school in 2010. There are no direct buses or any other form of transport available to these kids to go to school. So we had arranged for an autorickshaw. All the five children used to go in the same autorickshaw” said Sant Kumar, Manisha’s father a driver.
The other deceased, Durga had also joined the school two years back. “We had warned the autorickshaw driver to drive slowly but they are always in a hurry. He did what I feared the most,” said Ganga Ram, Durga’s father.
