Auto Expo 2014 may be shifted out of pragati maidan

The next edition of the Delhi Auto Expo may not be held at Pragati Maidan.

The next edition of the Delhi Auto Expo may not be held at Pragati Maidan.

Venue provider India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) has said that it will reconsider allowing the expo to be held at the venue in the future.

The next edition of the expo, to be held in February, 2014, will either be organised in Noida or Gurgaon.

The ill-managed Auto Expo ended on Wednesday. Mayhem ruled the show on all six days due to heavy and unruly crowds. Visitors even vandalised pavilions of international car giants such as Mercedes-Benz.

“This time, about 7 lakh people visited the Auto Expo. We had to cut down the number of visitors due to security and infrastructure issues,” said Rajive Kaul, chairman, steering committee, Auto Expo 2012.

Recently, the Delhi Police had said that no-objection certificates (NOC) might not be given to organise such events in the heart of the city.

“There is a huge problem with the management of the auto expo that leads to chaos. We will rethink the matter before giving the venue to the organisers of the auto expo next year. And in case we allow them, we will make conditions stricter in our contract,” said a senior ITPO official requesting anonymity.

According to ITPO sources, Pragati Maidan was rented out to the main organisers of the show, Confederation of Indian industries (CII), at around R25 crore.

The chaos inside and outside Pragati Maidan during the auto expo created a lot of trouble for the organisers and Delhi Police.
