The police have apprehended a teenager and arrested his friend for murdering a security officer of north Delhi’s Azadpur wholesale market two weeks ago.
Police said the teenager murdered 53-year-old Sumer Singh, assistant security officer with the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), for allegedly slapping him in public and not allowing him to take his father’s pushcart inside the market.
The arrested man is Love alias Labbu, a resident of Jahangirpuri in northwest Delhi. A country-made pistol, a Pulsar motorcycle and a towel the two allegedly used in the crime were recovered from them.
A wrestling champion from Nangloi, Singh was recruited in the APMC through sports quota. His job was to regulate traffic and control the movement of trucks entering and leaving the market at night and early morning.
On September 13, around 5 am, Singh was instructing truckers to park their vehicles properly when he was shot from behind. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
CCTV footage helped police zero in on two youths seen running away from the spot after the firing. One of them was identified as Love and he was arrested.
“Love confessed during interrogation and spilled the beans on his juvenile friend. We apprehended the teenager and solved the crime,” said an investigator.
The teenager reportedly told police that his father is a street vendor who sold food stuff in the Azadpur market. On September 12, his father was unwell and so he went to the market to sell the stuff.
But Singh did not allow him to take his pushcart inside. An argument broke out between them and Singh allegedly slapped him and told him to get out.
“The boy decided to settle scores. He took Love’s help and together they executed the murder,” the officer said.
