Expressing anger at the slapping of SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi by MNS members in Maharashtra Assembly, JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav on Monday described the incident as a "constitutional breakdown".

"This is anti-national and a constitutional breakdown. I strongly criticise the Congress-NCP government in the state for its failure to stop the incident. This is an insult to the national language and all the parties should oppose this incident," Yadav told PTI in New Delhi.

Party General Secretary Javed Raza dubbed the incident as an instance of "goondaism" and demanded strict legal action against the MNS.

"Congress is in power in the Centre and they have an alliance government in Maharashtra. We demand strict action to be taken against such goondaism," Raza said.

Earlier in the day, MNS members created a ruckus in the Maharashtra Assembly as Azmi began taking oath in Hindi. One of the MNS MLAs slapped him.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray had last month announced that his party legislators would ensure that all MLAs in Maharashtra take oath in Marathi.
