The head of a newborn, possibly a girl, allegedly eaten by dogs was found in Maurya Enclave area of northwest Delhi on Friday.

Police said a passerby discovered the head after noticing stench coming from an isolated field in CD Block.

“A PCR found the head behind some bushes in an isolated field. The rest of the body was missing,” said a police officer.

Even the sex of the baby could not be determined.

“We think that the body was eaten by street dogs in the area. We cannot confirm it so will wait for autopsy report to come out,” said the officer. The police believe the newborn was dead when its body was disposed off in the fields.

A case under Section 318, concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body has been registered against unknown people. Police suspect that the accused had disposed of the child after discovering the newborn’s sex and this might be another case of female infanticide.

A probe is on and police are enquiring about all the newborns born in the district.
