A Bangladeshi accused succeeded to give police the slip and fled from Patiala House courts on Sunday afternoon.
Six-seven policemen chased the accused on foot till India Gate but he managed to run away, police said.
The incident was reported on Sunday around 1 pm when two policemen had gone to produce two accused — identified as Joshim alias Amit and Anil Paswan — in the court.
As it was a holiday, the policemen were waiting with the accused outside the duty metropolitan magistrate’s room to produce the duo, police said.
A constable posted with the Connaught Place police station was holding the hand of Joshim.
“After waiting outside the court for sometime, Joship managed to pull his hands away and ran away,” a senior police officer said on the condition of anonymity since he is not authorised to talk to the media.
Police said six-seven policemen who were posted in the court complex ran after the accused but could not track him down.
“The man who fled away was a Bangladeshi vagabond. He had to be produced in court, so we took him there. But he managed to give the policeman a slip and fled away,” said Shankar Dash, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi).
Joshim and Paswan had been arrested in a theft case at Connaught Place earlier.
Police have registered a fresh case against Joshim. Police said they have initiated an inquiry against the concerned policeman and are investigating. “We are trying to locate the hideouts of the accused and will arrest him soon,” the officer said.
