Survival chances of the two-year-old battered baby on Monday dropped to below 50% for the first time since the past 13 days. The child is admitted in the neurosurgery ICU of AIIMS Trauma Centre.

As her condition worsened, the doctors had to put her back on the ventilator. She had been taken off the ventilator on Friday.

The two-year-old has developed lung infection due to which her breathing rate has increased alarmingly, and she had to be put back on ventilator.

A CT scan done on Monday morning revealed that fluid has collected in her brain. An emergency bedside minor surgery had to be performed in the afternoon to drain out the fluid, which was sent for analysis as doctors suspected it to be infected.

Late evening, the lab report confirmed it to be bacterial infection. A detailed analysis of the sample will be done later.

“We were praying that she wouldn’t catch any infection. But unfortunately she has developed lung and brain infection which is a cause for concern,” said Dr MC Misra, head of AIIMS Trauma Centre. “She is very small and we cannot say anything with surety now,” he added.

“We have given her a new antibiotic today and hope to control the infection. She continues to be fed milk mixed with high protein supplements through feeding tube,” said a doctor.

The baby was brought to the trauma centre on January 18 with critical injuries by a 14-year-old teenager, claiming to be her mother. Doctors had to perform an emergency surgery the day she was brought in.

Meanwhile, the police have moved a request asking for a sample collection to match the baby’s DNA to confirm her parentage.
