The Congress has ridiculed Team Anna member Kiran Bedi’s offer to return the excess money she had collected for her air fare, saying she can't absolve herself of the act.
“This means if corrupt people return money, they will also be absolved of their crime. Then why is A Raja in jail? Raja can also return the money and come out,” Congress leader Digvijay Singh said.
Bedi’s offer to return the money came after several prominent figures, including former chief justice JS Verma, described her action as immoral.
“Trustees (of her NGO India Vision Foundation) have instructed the travel agent to return the balance amount forthwith. They have already passed a resolution directing me to travel strictly as per invite. This leaves no room for discretion,” Bedi said.
She said travel agent Anil Bal, who is also a trustee of the Foundation, was handling the travel account and has been asked to return the money. Bal's agency was handling Bedi's travel assignments.
There were allegations against Bedi that she had overcharged hosts by inflating her travel bills and that she availed discounts on air tickets using her gallantry medal. She had defended herself saying she did not personally benefit and that the money thus saved went to the Foundation.
Singh also said the BJP’s defence of Arvind Kejriwal, another key Team Anna member, in the controversy over transfer of money to his NGO, was proof enough of the nexus between the team and RSS-BJP.
“BJP comes to defend Kejriwal. Doesn’t that prove me right? Complete nexus between RSS, BJP and Kejriwal. Anna ki jai ho,” he wrote on Twitter. BJP’s Varun Gandhi was quick to hit back on Twitter, saying Singh should “stop tilting at the windmills”.
“What nexus between BJP and Team Anna? I am an avowed supporter of the Jan Lokpal Bill, and yet have never met or spoken to Kejriwal, Bedi, Anna,” Gandhi wrote.
