Five organisations representing the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy on Saturday demanded intervention of US President Barack Obama to make the Union Carbide Corporation and Dow Chemical Company answerable to Indian courts.

In a letter to Obama, the survivors of the world’s worst industrial disaster said that deadly gases from the Carbide pesticide factory killed over 25,000 people and over 1,50,000 survivors are battling chronic diseases 26 years later.

They will hold a demonstration in Delhi on Monday. The organisations want the company to clean up the site, pay more compensation and face a criminal trial. “Dow Chemicals has owned Union Carbide, USA, for the last nine years and agreed to settle its dues there, but refuses to pay for the cleanup of the environmental damage in Bhopal,” the letter said.
