Founder-member Shanti Bhushan stirred AAP’s nest Thursday, saying the BJP move to name Kiran Bedi the CM candidate was a “masterstroke”, and that Arvind Kejriwal must quit as the Aam Aadmi Party chief after the polls.
Bedi would make a better chief minister than Kejriwal, Bhushan said, questioning the former Delhi CM’s capabilities to lead. His son Prashant, also an AAP member, said he didn’t agree with Shanti.
Coming two weeks before the city goes to the polls, the senior leader’s remarks are likely to dent the image of the two-year-old party fancying its chances at the polls almost a year after ruling the Capital for 49-days.
“People want somebody to be the chief minister who has an honest image Kiran and Arvind were both part of the Anna movement, it is definitely a masterstroke,” Bhushan told a news channel. “She would make a much better chief minister because there is so much being said against Arvind.”
Bedi and Kejriwal were part of social activist Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement but later fell apart.
The 89-year-old senior Supreme Court advocate said the ticket distribution in AAP was faulty. The party must choose a new chief after the February 7 elections, he told another news channel. Kejriwal played down the remarks. “It just shows that there is internal democracy in the party and all are free to air their views,” he said. Denying rift in the party, Kejriwal said the senior leader could approach AAP’s lokpal to voice grievances, if any.
Prashant Bhushan said he did not agree with his father. “He’s a senior member, he can express his views, but I do not agree,” he said. “Bedi had been against electoral politics but has now joined a communal and obscurantist party.”
His party colleague Yogendra Yadav said people could have different opinions about Bedi “but the question is what kind of forces she has joined”. Bedi thanked Bhushan for the “good words”. Party leader Anil Baluni said the BJP was thankful that people were speaking highly of Bedi.
