They stayed away on the weekends to avoid police who were deployed in large numbers. But dozens of stunt men on motorcycles were back on the capital’s roads late on Monday and drove around for hours.
According to the police, the motorcyclists were spotted near India Gate between midnight and 5am. This was despite the presence of police personnel in pickets in the area.
“The men tried to skid sideways even as cars were passing them,” said Ashish Sharma, 35, a commuter who was on way to his west Delhi home. “They were performing wheelies and other stunts,” he added.
The men on motorcycles appeared around the C-Hexagon, an officer said. “One of them was injured when policemen in the area tried to stop him,” said an officer.
The injured motorcyclist was taken to the RML Hospital for treatment. More personnel were deployed as precaution in the area on Tuesday evening.
The police said the group of bikers — of between two and three dozen men with faces covered — were seen at several spots in central Delhi.
They caused trouble near the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, the outer circle and finally near India Gate.
“Police personnel at pickets in the area tried to stop them and drive them away. But the men would return in minutes,” the officer said.
Increased vigilance by the police has recently led to the capture of hundreds of motorcycles.
Stunts men were similarly seen in the area a month ago during religious festivities.
A criminal case of disturbing peace and causing damage to public property has been registered.
