A petrol pump owner was robbed and a bank guard who came to his rescue was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne snatchers on Monday morning.
The robbery-and-murder was reported from IP Extension Colony in the Mandawali area of East Delhi.
Vijay Prakash Gupta (65), owner of a petrol pump in IP Extension, had come to deposit his two days’ collection at the Bank of India branch in the area at 8 am — the bank’s opening time. Gupta was carrying cash amounting to Rs 18 lakh in a bag.
Just before he stepped inside the bank office, two unidentified men accosted Gupta and demanded he hand over his bag.
Gupta resisted and Rajinder Singh Negi (48), the security guard stationed at the bank entrance, tried to assist him.
“Negi tried to catch the two men and called for help. At this, one of the men shot Negi twice with a country-made pistol,” said a senior police officer not authorised to speak to the media. “Negi died in the incident.”
Police said the assailants snatched the bag from Gupta and escaped immediately. “They had parked their motorcycle near the bank with its engine running,” said the officer. The assailants left behind the pistol.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Anand Mohan, who went over the closed circuit television (CCTV) footage at the bank, confirmed, “There were two motorcycle-borne assailants who robbed the petrol pump owner and shot Negi.”
The bank has two CCTV cameras but one was not working. However, police managed to get some footage from the other camera.
Mohan said the snatchers had planned out the operation, as they struck just when Gupta was about to enter the bank. The bank being closed on Sunday, Gupta was carrying two days’ earnings of his petrol pump.
Police officers said Negi was not carrying any weapon, as he wasn’t issued one by the bank authorities.
A case of robbery-cum-murder has been registered at the Mandawali police station.
