The Lok Sabha witnessed an uproar on Thursday after a BJP member claimed that a ministry of home affairs (MHA) official had allegedly assaulted and misbehaved with him on Wednesday when he had gone to meet the latter on a matter concerning his constituency of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Bishnupad Ray's allegations prompted strong protests from the BJP and other benches. He has also moved a privilege motion against the official.
On her part, Speaker Meira Kumar has called for a factual report from the home ministry. She later said such incidents should not recur. "A little insult to any member of this house is a serious matter. I am pained as it is my responsibility to protect honour and dignity of every member," Kumar observed. In his response, Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said the Centre views any mistreatment of any member very seriously.
