The BJP’s Vishwas Nagar councillor Dr Kanwar Sain is set to become the new mayor of Delhi on Thursday.
The party has a clear majority in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), where polls would be held on Thursday. It has a total of 167 eligible voters in the House. Sain, a practising allopath, is pitted against the Congress’ Darshan Jatav, a housewife. As per the rule of rotation, the seat is reserved for a Scheduled Caste candidate this year.
BJP leaders managed to convince rebel candidate Yogendra Chandolia, a councillor from Karol Bagh to withdraw his papers. “This was possible after intervention by the RSS,” a party source said.
Chandolia, a businessman, had claimed he was the senior-most among SC candidates and filed his papers and was reported to have sent text messages to party councillors to vote “according to your conscience”.
Elections to the post of deputy mayor and three members of the MCD’s Standing Committee will also be held on Thursday.
