BJP says no to move to cut BPL foodgrain quota

Terming as “unacceptable” the Union Food Ministry’s reported move to reduce the number of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families which get subsidised foodgrains by 45 per cent, BJP today asked the government to drop this proposal.

Terming as “unacceptable” the Union Food Ministry’s reported move to reduce the number of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families which get subsidised foodgrains by 45 per cent, BJP today asked the government to drop this proposal.

BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu told reporters that as per media reports, the food ministry seems to have suggested that subsidised foodgrains should be made available only to 5.9 crore BPL families from the existing 10.68 crore BPL families.

“If this is correct, it is astonishing as to how government that has come to power on ‘aam admi´ plank can think of reducing the quota by 45 per cent,” he said.

Naidu said the proposal was against the interest of the common man who is already facing pressures of inflation.

If the proposal is correct, then it is “unacceptable and the government should drop it”.
